Excerpt from Kings Highway
MANNY: Dee, that might be the love of your life leaving right now and you’re wasting your precious few pretty years left ragging on me!
DEE: Do you think I like this?
MANNY: It seems like you might.
DEE: You really think so, you selfish asshole?
MANNY: I do. I think you live for the drama. It’s the only way you get your kicks.
DEE: I’m taking care of this family.
MANNY: You’re choking everyone in it!
(BYRD reenters stage right.)
MANNY: Byrd, save yourself. Take the first flight out to Montana as soon as you can.
DEE: What?
MANNY: You didn’t tell her about the move?
BYRD: Jesus, Manny.
DEE: You’re moving to Montana?
BYRD: Maybe in a few months. In the fall. Before the winter --
DEE: Mom’s moving to Florida and you’re moving to Montana?
BYRD: Mom’s not moving to Florida.
DEE: But she said –
BYRD: I know what she said but she just made it up because she was afraid if I told you I wanted to move out west you’d be upset.
MANNY: Voila!
DEE: How long have you been thinking about this?
BYRD: Forever. Two days. I don’t know. I just need some direction.
DEE: And it points west? Montana west? You’ve never been anywhere.
BYRD: That’s exactly why I should go. Look, Dee, it’s like you said. I don’t have a real job and I don’t have my own family. I have nothing of my own. I need some answers. I need to know what the Hell I’m doing here.
ROSIE: Montana is nice. The people are so sweet.
DEE: Everything is sweet to you!
